Wellbeing

Well-being

At Heron Academy, the well-being of our staff and pupils is at the heart of creating a positive, inclusive, and successful learning environment. We are steadfast in our commitment to supporting everyone in our school community, ensuring that both staff and pupils feel valued, cared for, and empowered to thrive.

Pupils

We recognise that every pupil is unique and may encounter a range of challenges. Our approach to pupil well-being centres on fostering a safe, nurturing environment that supports emotional, social, and mental health.

Our therapy team plays a pivotal role in enhancing well-being and mental health support for our pupils. Many of our pupils are unable to express their needs verbally, through signs, or symbols, and therefore rely on familiar professionals to identify changes in their behaviour or presentation. The therapy team collaborates with class staff to understand the behavioural, communicative, or sensory needs of each pupil, implementing tailored interventions to improve their overall well-being.

Heron Academy is proud to have two trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) on staff. They provide targeted 1:1 support to pupils, focusing on specific aspects of emotional development.

We will also be providing Lego Therapy from September 2025.

We also offer a diverse range of therapies, including hydrotherapy, music therapy, and dance and drama therapies. These sessions are delivered either in small groups or on a one-to-one basis, depending on individual needs.

For cases where a pupil’s mental health requires specialist intervention, we work closely with the local CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) team in Lambeth. If concerns arise about a pupil’s mental health, we liaise with CAMHS to ensure they receive the necessary support.

Staff

At Heron Academy, staff well-being is paramount in guiding our practice and long-term. We strive to create a supportive and nurturing environment for our team as we believe this directly enhances the quality of education and care our pupils receive. At Heron Academy, we believe that when our staff are well-supported and emotionally well, they are empowered to deliver their best—creating a thriving and inclusive school where everyone can succeed.

Our approach includes:
  • A dedicated well-being leads who promote positive mental health across the school.
  • A shout-out board is in the staff room to encourage staff to recognise the support and hard work of their peers.
  • There is a staff library in the staff room.

  • Staff have access to an employee access service.

  • Our weekly bulletin ensures that all staff are aware of important information. The bulletin also has a Head Teacher thank you section.

  • Staff can access the onsite gym between 7-8:25 am and 4-7 pm.

At Heron Academy, we believe that when our staff are well-supported and emotionally well, they are empowered to deliver their best—creating a thriving and inclusive school where everyone can succeed.
